Speaking Fast & Slow [68,000 Words] explores how meaning shifts and mutates through visual conversation. Using envelopes—historically a vessel for deliberate communication—as both material and metaphor, I initiated image-based dialogues with selected participants. Each envelope began with an image of mine, prompting a visual reply printed directly onto the same surface. These exchanges unfolded slowly, unpredictably, and sometimes not at all, revealing the intimate rhythms and barriers of interpretation.
The project reflects on communication as an interpretive act—where intention is refracted through personal bias, experience, and distance. Inspired by Hito Steyerl’s writings on images as bonds, this work transforms each envelope into a layered record of dialogue, misreading, silence, and connection. Tangible and time-based, the resulting series sits in contrast to the ephemerality of digital exchange, offering a quiet meditation on how we speak, respond, and are understood.
